Wet Fluorescent Magnetic Test (WFMT) – this technique requires the use of UV light in a darkened environment. This is the most sensitive MPI technique and used extensively in the Power Generation and Petrochemical Industry during maintenance inspections.
WFMT is a most effective means of locating and clearly defining the size and shape of cracks or discontinuities, especially those open to the surface of a ferromagnetic object. This process involves the use of an ultraviolet light source which causes iron/oxide particles treated with a fluorescent pigment to emit a striking yellow-green color. The particles are drawn to any defects magnetically. Particles are manufactured in accordance with stringent guidelines regarding size and sensitivity. Because the visibility of the yellow-green color can be drastically reduced by any ambient visible light, there are established maximum limits for visible light at the surface of the object being inspected.
